Protection

The Amvrakikos Gulf is an area of high environmental importance and rich biological diversity. Because of this importance, the northern part of the Gulf is protected by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance.

Signed in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, this international treaty includes an international network of wetlands, which are important for the conservation of global biological diversity and the preservation of human life through their ecological and hydrological functions.

The Amvrakikos Gulf area is of high environmental importance, as it is characterized by a very rich biodiversity. Due to the aforementioned importance, the Amvrakikos Wetlands National Park is also part of the EU NATURA 2000 network. The northern part of the Amvrakikos Gulf includes Special Protection Areas (SPA) for birdlife. The site name for this protected area is AMVRAKIKOS KOLPOS, DELTA LOUROU KAI ARACHTHOU (PETRA, MYTIKAS, EVRYTERI PERIOCHI, KATO POUS ARACHTHOU, KAMPI FILIPPIADAS).
